" We call upon the Mayor of London Boris Johnson to reconsider his decision to cut the funding for London’s 2010 Black History Month from £132,000 to £10,000. London is one the worlds truly great multicultural cities. Ensuring that the historic and present day contributions made by all communities to the making of modern London is a fundamental responsibility of any Mayor committed to the promotion greater levels of cultural understanding and racial harmony.

Greater efforts to raise awareness of the hidden history and heritage of London's African and Caribbean communities should be supported.  Black History Month plays an important role in educating Londoners about the contributions made to the development of modern London. It is also critical in reinforcing positive self-images among young black people highlighting the political, economic and cultural contribution of London’s Black communities throughout the ages.

We are also concerned that the Mayors decision to cut this important budget will be replicated by other London Conservative Councils. The Mayor of the most diverse city in the world should be investing Black History Month seeking to promote greater levels of understanding and awareness among all Londoners. The Mayor needs to represent and promote the diverse interests of all of London’s peoples including African and Caribbean communities.

By taking this action we believe the Mayor will reinforce ignorance and promote racism in the London and we therefore call upon him to reverse his decision and fully restore London’s Black History Month budget. "

Harrison WD19 - This is an OUTRAGE!!!!!! I definately support this petition. Although I believe that Black History should be embarked on all year round; October causes a knee-jerk reaction which encourages people of all races to re-visit the historical content which involves the Black Greats, as well as a celebration of the current positive influences Black culture has had and is continuing to have in today's society.

I support the petition. The mayor's conduct is outrageous and disgraceful. His conduct in this matter is irresponsible and offensive. London is a multicultural city with the largest population of black people. He has made highly offensive comments about black people in the past, attacked Rise and the anti racist purpose of it and now this. He is sending a clear message to black people in the Capital that they are not welcome, not valued and not respected and we need to respond to his attitude and conduct. With the rise of the far right in London and wider with the actions of the BNP and the EDL in particular his actions plays into the hands of racists and fascists and does nothing to promote good race relations or to value London's diverse make up.

I strongly support this petition. Black History month is the only time our families come together and embrace our heritage.

I support this petition... For all the Black contributions in the community this is an outrage!!!

Yet the mayor sees fit to cut the finances. It is not good enough.

ALAKE RM1. While this has not been surprising, it is nevertheless still very disappointing. BHM needs changing, refocussing and re-energising, but not cutting. This is ultimately about the level of respect Boris Johnson has for the people who constitute almost 50% of the city he leads.

Total disgrace!! This petition has to be strong and vocal. No one should take a penny of that money, it's an insult!. Ninetynine Magazine will make it's stand known in our next issue and we will urge our readers to support this petition.
